EU research team to develop new thin film technology conversion rate up to 14%

Fast Track, a large-scale integrated project initiated by the Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany, intends to introduce the next generation of thin-film technology to the market. Eighteen leading European PV companies and research institutes have set targets to achieve a stable conversion efficiency of 14% for solar cells and 12% for component prototypes. The cost is expected to be lower than 0.5 euro/Wp.

The project will cost more than 14 million euros, of which 9.3 million euros will come from EU research grants.

In recent years, research on thin-film crystalline silicon cells has been devoted to solving its industrialization problems. In 2010, several companies demonstrated stable components with an area conversion efficiency of 10% greater than 1 square meter. The next challenge for this technology is the problem of multi-junction devices for thin-film crystalline silicon cells, which can produce more efficient solar cells. Its complexity lies in the geometry of the substrate and each layer can affect the entire device. Coupling strong light (high current) needs to be consistent with good electrical performance (open circuit voltage and fill factor).

New materials were introduced during the R&D process, including multiphase nanomaterials (such as silicon oxide nanocomposites and highly crystalline nanosilica materials), stable top cell materials, nanoimprint substrates, and new transparent conductive oxides.

The design and implementation of this equipment must also take into account the full interaction of the layers in a multi-junction device. The growth of the active layer of the textured material needs to be controlled. Preliminary experiments will also include very high-speed nano-silicon deposition steps or multi-step overlay etch processes as well as static and dynamic plasma deposition transfer processes.
