In 1928, the British bacteriologist Fleming first discovered the world's first antibiotic, penicillin. Today, 88 years later, British scientists have once again discovered that mold has other important functions. According to reports, the University of Dundee professor Jeffrey Gard and his team found that mold can not only be used to make batteries and capacitors, but also amazing power storage.

The scientists first chemically reacted Neurospora crassa, manganese chloride, and urea, and finally covered the long hyphae with minerals, heated the hyphae, and obtained compounds with desirable electrochemical properties such as manganese dioxide.

The branching structure of fungal hyphae can play a good role in the dispersion of the compound, which is conducive to the occurrence of redox reactions. According to scientists' paper published in "Contemporary Biology", compounds extracted and manufactured using mold have excellent "cyclic stability": after 200 charge and discharge cycles, the power storage capacity only consumes 10%. In addition, extracting and producing electrical energy from mold is a more environmentally friendly and sustainable method than extracting materials from other materials for manufacturing batteries and capacitors.
