All-weather solar cells will be realized

According to media reports, Prof. Qunwei Tang's group from Ocean University of China published a paper on Angewandte Chemie a few days ago to report possible ways to create all-weather solar cells. They use graphene and ions in the raindrops to generate voltages and currents in a clever manner, creating a "capacitor"-like effect. Qunwei Tang, the lead author and materials scientist, said that future solar cells will generate electricity under any weather conditions.

Prof. Qunwei Tang of Ocean University of China and Prof. Peizhi Yang of Yunnan Normal University developed a fuel-sensitized solar cell. In order to make the battery generate electricity in the rain, they coated a thin layer of graphene film on the solar cell. In aqueous solution, graphene electrons can be combined with positively charged ions. This phenomenon inspired Professor Qunwei Tang's research group to use graphene electrodes to obtain energy from water droplet impact forces.

Raindrops are not pure water. They contain salts and can be separated into positive and negative ions. Positively charged ions, including sodium, calcium, and ammonium ions, can bind to the graphene surface. When raindrops come into contact with graphene, the positive ions in the water become more abundant and the delocalized electrons in graphene become abundant. This leads to the delamination of positive ions and negative ions, much like the energy storage of capacitors, which is called a tantalum capacitor. This phenomenon is enough to generate voltage and current. A graphene-based pigment sensitized cell was added and then placed on a flexible, transparent indium tin oxide plastic. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the flexible solar cell is as high as 6.53%, and it can generate hundreds of microvolts of electricity under simulated rain conditions. Prof. Qunwei Tang, the first author of the paper, said that future solar cells will be able to generate electricity under any weather conditions.

Insiders pointed out that as an important part of new energy, solar energy has always been a hot area for clean energy. In recent years, some advanced technologies have been developed to produce efficient and cost-effective solar cells. However, solar cells still have a huge disadvantage. They cannot generate electricity in rainy days. If future solar cells can generate electricity under any weather conditions, it will be a major change in the energy sector and a milestone in promoting the popularization of new energy.
