Pros and cons of "GM" food

According to the latest news, the European Commission will approve a commercial planting of a genetically modified pest-resistant corn a few months later, despite the opposition of 19 countries. It is reported that this is the second time in the history of the European Union that GM crops have been approved for commercial planting.

In recent years, genetically modified foods have become the focus of people's livelihood. However, there is still no definitive conclusion on the pros and cons of GM foods. However, food experts believe that consumers should rationally treat genetically modified foods without having to talk about “transgenic” discoloration.

Half opposed EU approval for commercial planting

Transgenic insect resistant corn

It is understood that the genetically modified corn that will be proposed for approval is called "Pioneer 1507" (Pioneer 1507) and is cultivated by DuPont and Dow Chemical. As early as 2001, the pioneers 1507 R&D personnel submitted their applications for the first time in hope of obtaining approval. In a statement, DuPont stated that the EU has legal obligations for itself, EU farmers, scientists and trading partners, and endorses the approval of safe new agricultural products.

Prior to this, the EU had approved only two genetically modified crops that could be used for commercial planting - a potato and another corn. The genetically modified potato was later stopped by the court.

According to EU regulations, the number of votes for each member country depends on their population. In order to prevent the approval of this application, the European population corresponding to the negative vote needs to reach approximately 75%, but the final proportion is only 52%.

Critics point out that the genes for transforming crops are producing "Frankenstein-style foods" that will destroy the natural ecosystem and even harm human health. Mark Candidoro, head of Greenpeace’s agricultural policy, pointed out that the European Commission cannot ignore the scientific, political and legal concerns of a large number of countries, two-thirds of the members of the European Parliament and the vast majority of European residents.

GM crops are listed and planted

In the EU market, genetically modified agricultural products without official authorization cannot be put into service. The 44 GM crops, including NK603 genetically modified corn, have been approved for import into the European Union. The varieties cover cotton, soybeans, canola, potatoes and sugar beets.

In terms of crop cultivation, the area of GM crops planted in the EU in 2010 was 82,000 hectares, accounting for less than 0.08% of the world's total. There are two types of plants that have been approved for planting in their territory: the Monsanto MON810 transgenic corn from the United States and the Amflora transgenic potato from BASF.

In fact, the European Union's requirements for genetically modified food crops can be described as strict and strict, and even the marketing of honey produced from bees fed with genetically modified feeds is strictly limited.

Of course, China is also very strict on genetically modified foods, which require multiple approvals. At present, only GM crops that have been commercially grown in China are cotton and papaya. The GM crops approved by China for use as raw materials for processing include corn, rapeseed, cotton and sugar beet.

In 2013, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture approved the issuance of three GM soy import safety certificates. It is reported that China's safety review of these three varieties of genetically modified soybeans was very prudent. It took about three years from the initial receipt of applications to the approval of imports for the safety certification of processed raw materials.

It is also known that the United States is the birthplace of genetically modified crops. Since 1996, American farmers have extensively planted genetically modified crops. By 2011, the planting area has reached 69 million hectares, making it the world's largest grower of genetically modified crops. According to data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2011, 82% of cotton and 75% of soybeans in the world market have been genetically modified.
