Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is our most affordable and environmentally friendly renewable energy source. Recently, a team of researchers from the Hefei National Physical Science Laboratory has developed a new nanomaterial made of cobalt that can convert carbon dioxide gas into a clean fuel called formate. The research team used electrolytic reduction to pass a small current through this material, thereby changing the molecular structure of carbon dioxide and converting it into a clean fuel.

In other words, when current is applied to this cobalt nanomaterial, the molecules inside the material will interact with carbon dioxide molecules passing through it, which will cause the hydrogen atoms to attach to the carbon atoms of carbon dioxide, causing an extra electron to enter. One of the oxygen atoms, then carbon dioxide becomes formate.

Formate has the characteristics of easy degradability, low toxicity and low cost. The formic acid fuel cell made by adding palladium catalyst in formate has twice the power density of methanol fuel cell. At the same time formate is not easy to burn, easy to store and transport.

The use of cobalt nanomaterials by scientists to convert carbon dioxide into clean energy is seen as a major breakthrough in this field, and it will take some time for this technology to expand into the commercial sector.
