In-depth study on the barrier technology of plastic bottles

Owens-Illinois, M&G Polymers USa, and PPG Industries announced their progress in improving the oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties of PET, PP and HDPE food bottles.

O-I's Plastics Group (Toledo City, Ohio) has developed a new grade of SurShot (an inert, barrier-resistant multilayer system) with anti-delamination capabilities for the preparation of PET and polyolefin bottles. The delamination phenomenon is most likely to occur where the embossing or intarsia is placed on the container. In response to this situation, the OI reformulated its material to make the bond between the layers stronger. In addition, OI worked with Husky Injection Molding Systems (Bolton City, Ontario, Canada) to make the Surshot system suitable for use in Husky's new 144-cavity pre-injection mold. The breakthrough in this technology is the successful control of the barrier layer thickness in such multi-cavity molds.

Houston's M&G has just launched actiTuf barrier resins in the United States. This is an active-inert barrier system that increases the shelf life of food in PET bottles. In Europe, it has been used to make beer bottles. The preforming of the bottle can be done on a conventional instrument and the throughput is not reduced. The cost per pound of actiTuf is slightly more expensive than regular PET.

PPG (Milford City, OH) introduced a new material with higher barrier properties that needs to be sprayed onto PET, HDPE and PP bottles to form a barrier coating. This material is called Bairocade HP. Compared to the old material, it can reduce the wall thickness of the bottle by 40%, while the oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier of the bottle is the same as that of the bottle made of the old material. Also, the new material coating can be washed off when the bottle is recycled.
