Perovskite materials are a new type of semiconductor that is considered to be an effective substitute for silicon in solar cells. But its main disadvantage is its instability, in which the molecular methylamine-lead-iodine-3 (MAPbI3) plays a key role. The researcher of the university's solar energy laboratory, Danila Saranin, said that the perovskite solar cell with a photoactive MAPbI3 layer will release free iodine and hydroiodic acid after constant irradiation and subsequent heating, destroying the perovskite layer and NiO The interface between the layers forms many defects, which significantly reduces the stability and efficiency of the device.

To solve this problem, the researchers used a copper iodide layer between perovskite and NiO. The copper iodide layer does not degrade rapidly under the action of light, and at the same time releases iodine compounds similar to perovskite materials. In addition, the additional p-layer can improve the collection of positive charges and significantly reduce the defect density at the transition between the light absorption and hole transport layers.

Studies have shown that copper iodide can improve the structure of perovskite elements, increase its working stability by an average of 40%, and increase its efficiency to 15.2%.
